|We are happy to share our excitement in reaching various milestones along our journey towards the ultimate goal of the second grant cycle (2016-2018) — digitizing 100,000 pages of historic newspapers from Nevada! They will be added to the nation’s largest repository for historic newspapers Chronicling America by the end of August 2018!
We organize our digitization workflow in manageable and efficient work segments. We have divided the total number of 100,000 pages into 10 batches. Each batch delivers 10,000 historic pages from Nevada newspapers.
Our batches are named after Nevada Boomtowns and they contain various newspapers from Nevada. The batch names are randomly chosen and they do not represent the titles of the digitized newspapers in them. As confusing as it may seem, the batches are just tools the project team uses to make the work more structured and efficient.
In addition to the 10 production batches, we have a Sample Reel batch — this is the very first batch and helps us establish the workflow and ensures that our work meets the standards set by the Library of Congress. The final step that completes the project cycle is the microfilm deposit in the Library of Congress for long-term preservation (the microfilms will outlive all of us – their life expectancy is over 500 years!)
Track our progress on the graphic below – we update it in the first week of each month.
