UNLV Libraries joined the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) in 2014. For the first couple of years of the NDNP project (2014-2016) the Advisory Board selected for digitization from the public domain three Nevada newspaper groups. The titles cover the time span 1865-1922 and their selection was based on several very important criteria:
- Reflect the political, economic and cultural history of the state of Nevada
- Have a statewide or regional influence
- Are recognized as a “paper of record”
- Provide state or multi-county coverage of population area
- Have a broad chronological span
In 2016 we received grant renewal to continue preserving the historic newspapers from Nevada. During the second grant cycle (2016-2018) we are digitizing another set of five Nevada newspaper groups that cover time span 1863-1922.
The first grant cycle yielded 100,000+ pages of digitized newspapers from three Nevada counties (Ormsby, Lincoln, Nye) and the second phase of the project will produce another set of 100,000+ pages from five counties (Elko, Eureka, Esmeralda, Storey, Lyon).
More than 130,000+ Nevada newspaper pages are now readily available for free full-text searching and browsing at the official Library of Congress newspaper repository Chronicling America.
The list with all digitized newspapers from the state of Nevada can be accessed here.
Please visit Title Changes for brief information about each title and its name changes throughout the years.
